New Wedding Film rom-com 'Love Wedding Repeat'

If you are getting married in Norfolk or Suffolk, or down in the dumps if you have had to postpone your wedding and in general just stuck at home, we look at the top reasons why ‘Love Wedding Repeat’ needs to be added to your wedding film ‘watch list’…

A new heartfelt and witty Wedding Film - Love Wedding Repeat

In a time when weddings are being postponed, engaged couples wedding planning is being hampered as they can’t leave the house and newly married couples should be watching their own wedding films - ‘Love Wedding Repeat’ brings a medicine of laughter, romance and giggles at a period when we all need it. We all love films about weddings - classics like ‘Father of the Bride’, ‘Bridesmaids’, ‘Muriel’s Wedding’ and of course our favourite ‘ Four Weddings and a Funeral’. And indeed this latest offering from Netflix reminds us of Hugh Grant in that very film with a touch of British humour, class, a bit of stuttering and overall great story. While this particular film is set in Rome,Italy it is very distinctly British. The film centres around the unpredictability of chance with different versions of the same day unfold as Jack juggles difficult guests, unbridled chaos and a potential romance at his sister's wedding.

The cast - Love Wedding Repeat

You will be surprised to know that one of the cast and the films protagonist has major connections to Norfolk and Suffolk! Samuel Claflin who plays Jack, was born on the 27th June 1986 in Ipswich, Suffolk. He is known for portraying Philip Swift in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games film series, Alex Stewart in Love, Rosie, Will Traynor in Me Before You and more recently Oswald Mosley in the Peaky Blinders television series. Sam grew up in Norwich, Norfolk and was a member of the Norwich City School of excellence. In 2003 he studied performing arts at Norwich City College before graduating from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 2009. Sam is also joined by Olivia Munn, who is an American actress.

You may also spot Joel Fry who appears in a number of TV series, particularly sitcoms such as White Van Man, Trollied and more recently the smash hit film ‘Yesterday’ by Danny Boyle where after a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, (another) Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed. Performing songs by the greatest band in history to a world that has never heard them. Joel Fry plays a similar docile, dim yet hilarious and loveable character in ‘Yesterday’ as he does in ‘Love Wedding Repeat’

While this film is of course fiction, with some truly interesting characters and at times some outlandish possibilities of what can happen at a wedding - it also has a lot of grounding and strangely feels like it has a realness to what can happen on a normal wedding day because of course life is strange than fiction. This is probably why we all love attending weddings as a guest - the stories, the hilarious characters and personalities you meet and possibility of chance that you may meet the love of your life….

The story of a wedding and the possibility of chance

The start of the film is set in Rome, where Jack closely misses out on the opportunity of kissing one of his sisters friends named Dina (played by Olivia Munn) who has been his weekend tour guide to the city who he has quickly fallen in love with but things to don’t seem to go anywhere and the possibility of ‘what if’ will have plagued him from that point on as the farewell kiss that…didn’t happen.

Move on three years and Jack is at his sister Haley’s (Eleanor Tomlinson) wedding, marrying Italian stud Roberto (Tiziano Caputo). He then finds out that Dina is attending also! They are both single after both having failed relationships since their last meeting so it seems likely that all going well they could both connect/ reconnect and their once ‘kiss that didn’t happen’ could in fact finally.. happen (albeit three years later.) But as you guessed it…. in real life things wouldn't be that simple so a series of never ending mishaps ensue.

You also have to love the narration throughout the film, who we believe to be Judi Dench - who’s comedic lines and warm and familiar voice make for all the better story telling and comedy.

Jack spend the whole of his sisters wedding trying to avert a mountain of disasters whilst still trying to ‘get the girl’. The whole time you as the viewer have constant feelings of hope for the couple desperately trying to make this work but with dramatic irony of situations and possibilities forever getting in the way! Then around halfway through the movie, the movie itself presses rewind (you can do that with one of our wedding films too btw!) and it plays out all the scenes all over again all with almost every seemingly differently possibility that could happen does happen! (our wedding films don’t do that!). It will remind you of film like ‘Sliding Doors’ where small events create divergent realities - much like our own lives with every decision effecting our futures.
