The traditions behind Military Weddings that you never knew!

If you are lucky enough to be invited to a military wedding it is a truly grand experience with lots of meaning and tradition. Different branches of the military will of course have their own traditions so these will vary from wedding to wedding but uniforms will always play a key role in the aesthetic. In lots of ways, military weddings are not completely different affairs to a traditional weddings. It also depends on what degree of formality and tradition the bride or groom has chosen for their day. Military dress is usually found at the ceremony then military officers may choose a more traditional attire for the reception. While it is more common for brides to choose a traditional wedding dress, it is quite a popular choice for the groom to choose military attire.

Sword Arch

Sword Arches came from the British Army but are now also present in all American Military Weddings also. It is called the Arch of Sabers but is sometimes referred to as the Sword Arch or Arch of Swords. Originally, the tradition demonstrated a pledge of fidelity from the military to the new couple, since the military service members literally shelter the newly married couple beneath the arch as they exit the church or wedding venue. A detail of six or eight members marches in a double line then stands and faces each other. In most branches, only officers can bear a sword. Each person in the sword detail draws their swords simultaneously with blades pointing upwards to form an arch. (It looks great on wedding photos and wedding films!). The bride and groom then pass under the arch as they exit the church or enter the wedding venue. Usually, when the couple reaches the end of the arch, the final sabres are dropped to the ground and the couple must exchange a kiss. Once the kiss happens between the bride and groom (like in Gemma & Chris’s wedding) the swords are pointed upwards in formation once again, with a cheeky tap on the bride’s bottom by one of the swords! (well it is a wedding after all!)

Cutting the Cake with a sword

This is an exciting addition to a wedding reception that is sure to become a cherished memory and should also make for a great photo or in our case wedding film! Instead of a standard wedding cake knife, the bride will hold a sword while the groom places his hands on top of hers to guide it through the cake.
